Veterans Day recognizes the service and sacrifice of millions of American men and women on the completion of their uniformed service to the country.

In honoring veterans, the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs (SCDVA) announced Thursday that Retired Army First Sergeant Alvin King would be the inaugural South Carolina Veteran of the Year for the 2022-2023 nomination cycle. The award serves as a recognition to honor the remarkable contributions of Veterans in our community, and an Internal Selection Committee selects the individual from among the four Veteran of the Quarter recipients.

King is a 20-year United States Army veteran and founder of the Range Fore Hope Foundation. The nonprofit focuses on facilitating outdoor activities as a positive outlet for active-duty service members, combat and disabled Veterans, and their dependents. Its goal is to assist with overcoming the challenges associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other difficulties faced by Veterans and their families…… read more about this article by clicking the link below

About 130 River Bluff High School students participated in a Veterans Day tribute,  bringing back an annual celebration that was halted by COVID-19.

The tribute was organized by Michael Burgess, a history teacher at the Lexington school and the lead teacher for River Bluff’s Center for Law and Global Policy, and featured musical selections, historical narrations and South Carolina’s first Veteran of the Year, 1st Sgt. Alvin King of the U.S. Army.

The event was held this year in conjunction with the History Channel’s “Take a Veteran to School” outreach program.

“This is a part of our core values at River Bluff,” Burgess said, referring to citizenship. “It teaches them to value multiple perspectives. It’s our principles and beliefs that unite us. It allows us to honor those who fought for our country and to uphold our dignity.”

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — South Carolina’s first-ever “Veteran of the Year” was announced at the State House Tuesday morning.

Of the more than 400,000 Veterans across SC, Army First Sergeant Alvin King (Retired) was chosen for his service, leadership, and impact on the Veteran community.

King was presented the award by Governor Henry McMaster and SC’s Secretary of Veterans Affairs Todd McCaffrey.

“Among these hundreds of thousands of Veterans, we are incredibly fortunate to have a select few emerge as truly phenomenal servants to their fellow Veterans and their state. The SC Dept. of Veterans Affairs realized that we have both an opportunity and an obligation to highlight Veterans that do so much for others,” says McCaffrey.

King’s resume includes eight combat tours, multiple humanitarian missions, and service in conventional and Special Operations Forces during his time in the Army.

“I served my country for 20 years. It was an honor, and in retirement, I decided to continue to serve and give back, not only to my fellow brothers and sisters in arms, but to their family members as well as anybody connected to military service,” King says.
